5 tips to get you started on being a great lacrosse defenseman: 1. You have 6 feet of stick. Learn how to use it. Learn how to check, learn how to throw, learn how to catch, learn how to keep it in passing lanes, learn how to pick up ground balls – both hands sunshine. 2. Communicate. You know what happens to d-men who don’t call out where the ball is? Who don’t call out the slide? Who don’t tell their wingman where the pick is? That’s right – they end up on the bench as 4th string middies. 3. Body positioning. Your body is the most valuable tool you have. Duh, right? Not even Gary Gait can shoot through your body so keep it between the shooter and the goal. Never sacrifice good body position for a cool check. 4. Keep your head on a swivel. Always be looking around, know and try to anticipate what is happening and what is going to happen. 5. Don’t play for the glory. Offense sells tickets, defense hurts people. Work hard. Never give up and play as a team. Obviously these 5 tips alone aren’t going to take you to DI schools. But I can guarantee you that without them you wont make it past jv.
