Quick tips for Lacrosse Goalies
I. Positioning (find your comfortable stance with these items in mind) A. Feet should be shoulder width apart.
B. Hands should be away from your body (ready for offside shots).
C. Stick should be 100% vertical, tilted to your handed side.
D. Body should be directly between the ball and the goal at all times (duh, right?). II. Skills A. Passing, scooping and shooting (yes shooting) are almost as important as making saves. There is only one thing worse than making a great save and then turning the ball over and that is making a save and then impaling yourself trying to scoop the rebound.
B. Communication is a must. Talk. Constantly. Call out the ball position. Call out the next slide. Call out warnings of cutters, open men, people coming in from the box, possible moves even which hand the ball carrier is. The point is that you are the quarterback out there.
C. Learn the angles and cut them down. Understand the turf and what bounces could happen. Playing goal is a 100% a thinking man's' position until the shot is fired then it's 100% reflex. III. Intangibles A. A goalie, more so than everyone else on the field, needs to remain constant. Any of your team thinks you gave up? It's game over. To be a goalie you have to have big pride and a short memory.
